Slide Guitar Technique 101
Playing slide guitar can be like ice skating for the first time. You thought you knew how to play guitar, but suddenly you're not in control anymore and it's easy to fall flat on your backside!
Are you totally new to slide guitar?
Have you played for a while but think you've developed bad habits?
Either way, Slide Technique 101 is for you!
-
Many guitarists play "a bit of slide" - they can play a few licks, maybe even a couple of songs and then they're stuck - they get bored with playing the same stuff over and and they’re not even sure if they're doing it right.
Not only do they not realise there's a step-by-step approach to developing slide guitar technique, but because good slide guitar teachers are few and far between, they probably don't even exist in their local area.
The truth is that it's no different from building your skills in anything worthwhile - there's a discipline, some hard work to do, but the end results are well worth it!
-
For many people, slide guitar is synonymous with the blues, but the origins lie in Hawaiian music...
Slide guitar is simply an immensely expressive way of playing guitar, and because of this lends itself well to any style you can imagine.
Of course, open tunings can sound great (and don't have to be as daunting as a lot of people make out), but there are phenomenal slide guitarists out there playing every style of music and in every tuning under the sun (including standard tuning).
-
It depends what you're trying to do - you can leave your playing like this, if you like it... but I'll bet your heroes didn't :-)
If you work on systematically developing your technique and clean up your slide playing, you'll be able to play so much more music!
